IKONIKA Idiot

March 10th 2010 by Yang | Tags: , , | Tweet this post

If this new EP of Ikonika is any indication of quality for her debut album have Contact, Love, Want, Have, then we’re in for a real treat. Idiot starts out with her signature off-beat 8bit melodies but instead of being combined with halfstep rhythms the melodies are paired with some powerful soca drums. The result is a hybrid funky roller which will hit the dancefloors with devastating effects. On the flip is a remix by Altered Natives who we all know from the incredible funky anthem Rass Out. The remix isn’t a new hit in the making but  it’s still a nice extra if you’re into dark broken beats.

BEN UFO Hessle Forever And Ever And Ever Mix

The latest of the LuckyMe mixtapes comes from Hessle Audio co-owner Ben UFO. Amazing mix perfectly portraying the funky dubstep fusion which is going on right now. The immense amount of new tracks in there makes me want to wish it was 2011 so that the majority would hopefully be out.

FOUR TET Love Cry

February 15th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , , | Tweet this post

Four Tet delivered with his recent There Is Love In You maybe his best album yet. It has this amazing mix of musical ideas moving in between genres perfectly. The original is beautiful voiced with samples over great beat programming, perfectly timed bass lines and ditto (deep house?) synth structures. Listening to Joy Orbison’s remix it feels like the original but the beats are at first chopped and then suddenly simplified but utterly effective. Again the voices with the added pulsing beat are pure dancepleasure. Roska takes it to a more funky bassline with a shuffle. Nicely cut back voice again and the break is sucking us into a floor nodder. Previously out on a real real real limited vinyl but now a digital release (I know….)

CEEPHAX Psychtapolis

February 13th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , , , | Tweet this post

Over the past few months we’ve seen scarcely the sound of Acid influencing the dubstep scene. The other day we had the new Terror Danjah with its heavy analog acid sounds. Now we have Ceephax moving skillfully between the currents of dubstep grime and Funky. If you ever heard his sound before you know his rave electro acid sound. Still these styles are dominant on this release, Thicker Train with its arcade fire, rave-ish beat, a pure acid stomper, but on Soulfully Man we hear how the combination of dubstep and his sound merge perfectly. Electric Transit is funky as hell, pure acid for the floor but in a 2010 setting. Bacardi Breeze on the other hand is a pure house crowd pleaser: cheesy as hell with it’s synth melody the hand claps. With this record you can please every crowd.

JOY ORBISON The Shrew EP

February 8th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , | Tweet this post

The new Joy Orbison is already something to look out for after his debut smash Hyph Mngo. The new one will be released on the famous label AUS Music. The Shrew and So Derobe are from the same wood like his two previous pieces: catchy poppy tunes with tempting uplifting rhythms, perfectly placed voices, heavy pushy basslines. It moves in between styles like garage and funky and pop. This might as well be his total breakthrough.

Kingdom – Mindreader EP

February 5th 2010 by Yang | Tags: , | Tweet this post

Mindreader and You have been banging on a lot of mixes for some time now and now Kingdom’s debut release on Fool’s Gold is finally out. His productions are absolute dancefloor stompers and lie somewhere in between bassline, house and UK funky. It’s actually pretty cheesy, especially with the trance like vocals, but the fat riddims will just make you dance instead of wondering whether or not it’s ok to dance to. Some remixes in there as well from big names like Todd Edwards and Night Slugs duo Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. The L-Vis 1990 remix is my favourite and what do you know… it’s up on RCRD LBL for free!
