Beat Burger, Rotterdam
Even Voorstellen: Crew 1
Even voorstellen: Crew 2
Got this track sent over last week from the young Kilter and it’s definitely worth a mention. He felt Lunice‘s track Perpetual Leisure needed some Pharrell vocals on top and he is so right! This is smooth as butter.
Robot Koch released a while a go his debut album Death Star Droid, a very exiting and diverse album. Robot Koch asked some people to remix tracks of the album. My personal favorite Gorem Sen is remixed by Loops Haunt, Shlohmo, Body Language, Talen, Phono O, Beat Laden but there are also remixes from other tracks by fLako and Blue Daisy. As you see it covers our fav artists quite well! It contains also two brand new tracks, one called Blind (feat Grace) with a nice wobble over a soulful track. The other one is New Day which is a collab with Body Language. TheLoops Haunt cover is my fav. Last week he played it during his live set and I was blown away, ran into him and was like I need that hip hop ish track. Turned out I have it, it was Gorem Sen…. The video-clip of Blind contains sampled material from Maya Deren, Man Ray and Luis Buñuel.

Muhsinah you might know from her voicing tracks for people like Clonious, Exile, Common and Mike Slott. Her voice is warm, tempfull and kinda lazy. Her solo 7″ on All City’s 7×7 second series is with beats by some people you might know, Flying Lotus and DC’s 00Genesis. If you like this kinda mix of warm soul with abstract beats you need this. Always

We listened to the previous Souleance, Le Monde, so much that it ended up in some of our lowriders yearlists. Souleance is Fulgeance (yes he again, check the link to his enormous attention on our blog ) and DJ Soulist, both from the soul and hip hop centre: France. This pleasure bomb, a 7″ on First Word, is constructed around smooth sampling, plopping basslines, harmonic organs, shouts. It has this perfect mix of nostalgia, hip hop and electrified soul. The remix of Le Plaisir is done by the ever surprising Kidkanevil (our connection completing). It swings with great push AUWW!

The Dreamerzzz on (Dunbar’s own) Future Times appeared in my collection a few months ago. I was intrigued by its beat programming, out of tune synths and a funk push that reminds me of Skweee. The opener Bare Feet has this utter optimistic feel. The use of this sticky melody line, the voice-samples and the beat sucks you into the song. It feels like a hip hop track done in a soul setting without the cliches by some stubborn dude who plays his own game. All the tracks on this first EP for RAMP are with this same feel. Wouldnt Matter could be like a lo-fi motown disco rip-off (Mimi Riperton comes in mind, WHY?). WAVs has a similar taste but it shifts a bit more towards early 80ies. Which brings me to the idea that this might shift towards lo-fi soul Skweee….

This got out last week but was wrestling with other stuff so forgot to write this. Blockhead’s previous work on Ninja Tune and Mush had my full attention. His tracks have always been near genius and somehow I lost track of him over the last few years. I was amazed that he was still going strong…
Fulgeance told us personally that he was working on a new project. So how comes that I totally missed this great EP? Dunno but make sure you get it. Here a little promo video:
