HUBERT DAVIZ Proceduri De Rutina

May 15th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , ,

Hubert Daviz is a Rumanian producer who you might know from his Up My Alley releases Beatnicks Tapes (both volumes)! He has also been producing music for German hip hop outfit Huss & Hofn and Shuanise from Eglo (Alexander Nuts label) and Up My Alley fame.
Now he’s releasing for Melting Pot Music.
Proceduri De Rutina
is a mini-album soley made of Rumanian jazz records, like his mixtape he did to warm us up for this.
Originally made as a beattape just for the skills it grew into a mini album. Concept wise I compare it to Ninja tune Skalpel who produced a simular project with obscure Polish Jazz records a few years back. Maybe he got inspired by it.
The record also feels like like a lazy sunday in the park, drinking wine with some friends talking about life… Details like the ticks of the dust on the records, the (mono) flatness of the sounds help to the vintage feel of it.

SUN RA Disco 3000

disco3000Kindred Spirit releases a limited one from legend Sun Ra: Disco 3000. So what, you might think but for me this record is essential. In Disco 3000 the sentence Space is the Place is dropped, which we deformed into the credo  Lowriders. Next to that this is as essential as it can get. Made early ’78 just before the flight back to the USA they recorded this milestone in Milan with a quartet instead of his orchestra. Never again Will Sun Ra work within such setting which makes it unique. For me Sun Ra is more then the music. His vision, his combination of art, politics, music is fascinating. After reading books like Blutopia, reading and watching Space is the Place and some other stuff I was hooked. With this release I’m grateful to finally have this….

LORD NEWBORN & THE MAGIC SKULLS

September 9th 2009 by SIMcommander | Tags: , ,

skullsThe Ubiquity label is suddenly back in our range of attention. The Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls is a collaboration effort of Shawn Lee, Money Mark and Tommy Guerrero. It brings us instrumental hip hop (with real instruments) with electronica infected with some jazz, funky breaks with a nice west coast flavouring. The record is the result of a few ‘winter’ weeks jamming in the studio of Money Mark in LA. Would have been perfect summer record! Listen to the soundbites
