astro:dynamics

One of my favorite records at the moment that will drop the shops soon is astro:dynamics compiled by Rekordah. We already announced this one and were totally blown away by the soundbites alone.
Now having the record in my ipod for more then some time, I must admit it’s so fitting the weather it has become the soundtrack of my summer mood.
Allthough the record is very diverse, shifting from pure summer beach madness to freaky stuttering funky slammers it’s as coherent as can be. Read more »

MWESLEE Eurocarne

April 5th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , ,

After the acclaimed Dizz1 and Dorian Concept 12 inches Nod Navigators is putting out another essential release in this series.
Eurocarne
kicks the new Mweslee EP off with this rave-ish hyper synth covering the hip hop beat becoming an anthem on the spot. Novo Olimpia is this early 80ies instrumental hip hop track with these peculiar Casio sounds on top. Some rudimentary beat-programming perfectly executed…. Variations Pour CX Pallas starts off like a minimal composed piece like Philip Glass of Steve Reich but with a hidden groove and a gritty feel to it, created by recording it on a cassette. It stays in your mind like a childs riddle, sweet and colorful as candy. The flip opens with Far Loop Era which is pure keyboard mayhem transforming into this epic melodic pushy eery nodder. Pacifico brings us back to Mweslee’s hip hop basics. a light nodder with some great sparkles with some magicly placed breaks. Manana Calor is this over sweet, killing dental fillings candy flick.
Mweslee
has released on the Beat Dimension series and an EP, Megaplast for KS and on the 7×7 All City series a 7 inch. This Spanish producer is also responsible for the new label Arkestra, with Bflecha as well known first one!

ONRA Long Distance

April 4th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , ,

Onra shifts his sound from this introspective kinda abstract beats Like on his Chinoiseries and 108 releases for the Favorite label, from his home country, to a much more electro funky swingbeat kinda sound which refers more to Dam Funk. The record starts with this collab with Washington native Olivier DaySoul. It’s amazing funky in a vintage kinda way. The synth bass is dominant as the vintage chorus lines are. It’s all 80ies feel is real but also a bit confusing because we bought an Onra 12 inch. The voice of Olivier DaySoul is so warm… you might remember him from voicing on Hudmo‘ recent Just Decided (from the Butter LP).
Rock On is so bass thick when it starts (same kinda bass synth) with reverse sucking hi-hats killin it…. The voice samples are making you hype… High Hopes is voiced by Reggie B who released on Circulations in the past, has a warm R&B soul style which fits good in this 80ies feel.
I have to think about this one. I like the record but i’ts difficult to find Onra on this one. Confused? I hope the 2LP later in May gives a, better, insight on the new directions….

1000names – Paradise Rings

January 12th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , ,

The men, Casio Blaster, 99 Mistakes are from Sofia, Bulgaria and called 1000names and are about to release a green 10 inch on the famous Black Acre label, home of another friend Akira Kiteshi! We know the 1000names from their great releases on Eklektik and their performance at LowridersDropp last year. They have a certain view on hip hop and making beats that’s fresh and original. The debut on Black Acre is no different. The tracks inspiration seems to come from  70ies S-F movies and early 80ies disco and are created around 8bit mayhem, movies samples, stuttering beats, shifting patterns and stunning basslines. Other then the Skweee people their sound-output not electro but hip hop based, the opposite direction from the same roots.
Paradise Rings is using cheesy pitched samples over a pushy straight beat which reminds me why I used to be a 4×4 hater but then immediatly everything shifts accept the straight beat which keeps you to the floor because everything else is shifting in a timemachine vortex. Read more »

PETER DIGITAL ORCHESTRA Local Hero

January 7th 2010 by SIMcommander | Tags: , ,

Peter Digital Orchestra is the clubby out fit of Fulgeance. In this slick fluorestic costume he is a party animal pure sang: here to please you with smooth quirky sounds to which you smile, dance and party all night long! The sound is somewhere between disco and electro, cheesy but never boring. Full of 8 bit wonders, arcade fires, hand claps and hisses and easy bass synths. Pure dance floor fun. Born in 1980 is this pure electro-funk track with its over-the-top synth build-up. With titles like Bubblegirl you can only feel happy. Red & White and Jeux de Langues are put on this especially for peops like me who also want a bit phat bass so Peter Digital makes also REAL bass tracks with a heavy nod and a too corny chorus, I love it! Would fit perfectly in a wonky set. Banging Booties seems to find his inspiration in Motor (Sebastian) but then it shifts into a disco slammer from the future with the hand on the pitch so it becomes a totally immediate banger! Out on Eklektik.

Harmönia Presents: International Skweee Vol. 2

November 12th 2009 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , , , ,

hrmn-010After the previous compilations : Skweee Tooth (a collab of Ramp with Flogsta Danshall) and the dødpop, we have the third in a row compiler: the new Harmönia International Skweee Vol. 2. It has been in my ipod ever since on the rewind.

The overall feel of this release is WOW. This is the compiler which has the potential to define the standard. More then Skweee Tooth and even dødpop this is a groundbreaking record. The diversity of sounds, tempo, beats, treats stay well within the Skweee feel but give the genre at the same time so much possibilities in which way it can or may develop. The importance of this might relate to the first Beat Dimensions record. It’s dangerous and pretentious maybe to say but listening to this record over and over again just makes it more clear. (So it’s also difficult to write about it…) There are no bad or so so tracks on this one.  Read more »

Randy Barracuda’s Electro Funk Rarities vol.1

November 1st 2009 by SIMcommander | Tags: , , ,

ghettoblaster-familyRandy Barracuda’s Electro Funk Rarities vol.1 is an exploration into stuff most only read about (not me I lived that area!). Randy told me about is his collection of rare electro-funk from the early 80ies and his quest for getting this stuff.

Expect some funky basslines, vocoders and handclaps. You can hear where people like Dam Funk, the Skweee’s take there inspiration from. “An ex tempore mixx in friend’s garage one nite. Contains some sloppy mixing but who gives a fuck?” The ghost of Rick James is never that far away….
