One of my fav bass outfits of all time is Rhythm & Sound. Founded by the Basic Channel / Chain Reaction innovators Mark Ernestus & Moritz von Oswald they have created an essential back catalogue for bass heads. All their releases on Burial Mix, PK and Rhythm & Sound have created an oeuvre on it’s own. The bring-back-to-the-essence concept purifies the reggae set-up of the drum and bass section and is then covered with some minimal keyboard/guitar dubs. The releases were published as rhythms in the dub tradition with version tracks on the flip and voiced ones on the A-side. At first it was done by Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman) and later also collabs with some veterans from the Bull Wackies back catalogue, amongst them Jah Batta, Choson Brothers, Love Joy, Jennifer Lara and Cornel Campbell. The latter voiced some of the most memorable tracks of Rhythm & Sound: King of My Empire
At the moment the are re-releasing their first track No Partial that is out on PK. Earlier released as PK006 (as a split with The Wailers Band) and later on CD and recently on a R&S compilation.
It doesn’t get more pure then this.
Part of the Los Angeles music scene (Brainfeeder ao), and aided and abetted here by producers The Gaslamp Killer, Mainframe and Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi stands strong despite his impressive helping hands. His dominant voice and ditto sound ideas are (lucky for him and us) all over the record. He moves music wise, somewhere between freak-folk, retro-hippie, orientalism, and abstract beats and it is tempting and dearing as hell. The electro-acoustic dominance together with the treated voices makes it kinda vintage but through the drums and bass it stays within the present. The sounds and songstructures stroll between psychedelic hypnotizing near madness which places him in the centre of his influences: San Fransisco seventies; Beatles; 22Pistepirkko; all these Mush kinda west-coast folk-hip-hop and as last: dub.

The brothers Funcken are in the music bizz for a long time with off and on success. Their projects vary in music styles from IDM, techno, electro, hip hop and just for the last couple of yours they moved into dubstep. Their sound on the Dubstoned EP (number 3 already) is very dub reggae infected. The dubs are heavy on the bass, the space reverb is all around us: trippy space. During the EP the sound evolves towards dubtechno (Delibel / Sovtron) but then more from a IDM perspective. Again the Funcken brothers define their specific field of music from their guts to their brain.
The remix by the brilliant Wallonians Herrmutt Lobby (only digital) makes it complete. Dark, grimy, pure sandpaper for the ears and brain.

One of the people that has been in my record collection from my youth on is Adrian Sherwood. He connects, some of the different styles I like, the best: dub, noise, post punk. This trailer of the documentary already gives you an insight on his ideas, influences (which covers also mine). Listening to his productions and solo records have been always a discovery into sounds and still after all these years and everytime I hear his doing a show I’m suck into the scape, the void.
Recently On-U-Sound started again with this series with Lee Perry, I wrote an post earlier on this. (this is old but worth the post…!)

Ever since their 7″ release Moongazer I’ve been a fan of Invasion. Invasion is a scream-soul-psychedelic-metal-stripped-down-to-basics trio that released last month their debut album The Master Alchemist. I love it. Sam Shakleton (the same) made on an open invitation the remixes (they just sent him all the tracks….). The voice of Chantal Brown has already a haunted feel but in the remix it goes right through your bones, amazing…. Like a true dub artist Shackleton takes the flow from their tracks and creates, especially on part 2 (which is the dub of Six Red Wizards), a ganja trip which is as psychedelic as it can get. Compliments to the great Shackleton once again. (out in december?)

For the second time in a year DJ/Rupture en Matt Shadetek team up to release a compilation. or do we say 3rd time. The We are Raiders with Jahdan Blakkamoore which got released in September last year was an joined venture for Dutty Artz with the 3 of them. On Uproot, also on Agriculture, Rupture used a lot of tracks with Shadetek.
Like the previous releases this record leans a lot on the dubby dubstep side of life. It’s a mix cd so you really need to be aware to see where we are. As we can expect from the likes of Rupture and Shadetek it’s a beautiful cocktail and clash of sounds, styles and travels trough the wonderful world of modern time. It blends remixes by by the duo for several people with some outstanding original work. With artists like Timeblind, Elizabeth Alexander, Paavoharju, Stagga/Babylon System, Cardopusher, Pumajaw, Caroline Bergvall, Noah D, Shackleton, Luc Ferrari, Matt G and many more!

Presented as a mini documentary featuring Lee Scratch Perry, Subatomic Sound System, Jahdan Blakkamoore, Dubblestandart (plus interview footage with Rusko and live clips of Jahdan with Major Lazer). This adds a bit to my previous post on Lee Perry. It can also be seen as a promo tool to promote Jahdan Blakkamoore effort to introduce Blackboard Jungle into a dubstep scene with his record on Subatomik.Check the soundbites

mixing my dub and Miles Davis (I know, its out for a while but just got it in!)
The Combination of two heroes Lee Perry and Andrian Sherwood has been a wet dream for ages. One of them entering the dubstep scene was another. And for the last few months it has come true! Lee Perry (He suddenly skips the ’scratch’) has released 3 records on Adrian Sherwoods On-u-sound label. He is not only producing the records but also, like on Excersising with Horsepower chanting again. His voice like on all of his records in the past tempting, mystifying, sacral almost. Perry’s hand on dubstep is an total new insight on how tracks are built, how deep you can or maybe must go. The intriguing thing is that Perry also goes into a collaboration with Kode9 who has been an admirer of the magician mysticus. I was at the live show of Kode9 earlier this year in Amsterdam which was an expierience from another planet. And after the show we were discussing that it would be great if Kode9 would at some point team-up with Perry or Sherwood, a wish come true! Music is developing with jumps forward but also backwards and this series is the proof that it can be groundbreaking.
