Choice On 12 is the limited vinyl sampler, all tracks taken from the forthcoming full length album
Choice, out on the great (dutch)
Eat Concrete Records in this summer.
Aardvarck (Dutchman Mike Kivits, for those few who don't know) takes his Bloom series to another level, combining his fascination for monotonous riffs and rhythms, bass music with analog synths. He has these magical track names that make, us dutch smile and aware of how randomish tracktitles can be sometimes, and sometimes not....
The opener
Leuk he! have this summery linger on feel to it, deep heavy bass and a catchy whiff...
3 Tot 1 Zonder Toaster kick like a deep raw dancehall riddim without giving room for a toaster to go wild, complete with an airhorn to shift into another more uptempo killer.
Je Bent Zelf Raar! (your weird yourself) has this keyboard mayhem start, moves into a basic hip hop kick then shifts and re-takes the hip hop beat covered with 8bit lazers.
Vinnik Zelf Lekker is a tasty LA ish kinda vibe, slightly noisy with backwards played synths. Constantly surprised how it develops. Closing track
Dik is smokers delight: spacious couch surf music. All together this sampler gives an interesting idea of what can happen in Aardvarck's continuum, no bounderies, no standards just space

We have made it. All the Lowriders finished their 2009 list. Some small because they planned to move during the holidays some long, like the SIMcommander, as always!
We had a busy 2009 and met a lot of great people at
Lowriders, Dropp and
Raw Rhythm and made friends for ever. Had great dinners at home with artists, got drunk with them, the works...!
As you might know by now we are starting a label with some twelves and EPs coming up with great talents, some friends! We will be partying again at WORM, doing collabs with orgs and peops we like, will be in the UK and discovering and sharing interesting new music. We will also start a series of exclusive mixtapes and interviews with people we know and like.
It will be a busy and interesting year, again!
Check the individual lists of
Coco Bryce, Yang, Beatnologic, Ruwedata, C02Ro and
SIMcommander.
The summery of the Lowriders lists (in no specific order):

DORIAN CONCEPT - When Planets Explode (Kindred Spirits) [audio:http://rushhour.nl/sounds/48351_1.mp3]
Below my list in no particular order. A mix of dancefloor and home-entertainment, post-rock gitars and sweet ill-biant. So much to choose from...

MONOLAKE / T++ - Atlas [ T++ Mix ] (Imbalance)
PEVERELIST - Jarvik Mindstate ( Punch Drunk)
JOE GIBBS - Dub Serial (Greensleeves)

As allways making lists is asking for trouble. I really try to keep up during the year (I even have a file on my desktop the whole year on named toplist!!). What do I listen to, what stays on my turntables, ipod. Sometimes I listen to a track to long so I bore myself (stupid) and some tracks stay in my head forever.
This year was great for the abstract beats and everything that developed from this. Dubstep as a genre is becoming problematic: to harsh, not subtle, to much copying formulas and then again people like
Kryptic Minds (just didn't get my list, place 21) and some others like
Akira Kiteshi were amazing but Skweee really did it for me. The adventure is great, going from funk to idm-ish to dubstep-ish! But the most amazing track was Sluga's rework of
Pharoah Monchs Simon Says. All lists in no order...!
12"

With the LP's/CDs it was as difficult. I tried to concentrate on the stuff which got stuck in my ipod and cdplayer. I also played a lot of
Beirut, The
3EP by
Shackleton, ATOM TM,
SND on Raster Noton, and stuff like
DIRTY PROJECTORS and
the Girls are to fresh to decide if they would end up in my list.
Moritz Von Oswald Trio was oke but in the end not enough playtime, like
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, Shafiq Husayn,
SUNN O))).

Next to this list I went to a lot of great parties and concerts. The best for ages has been
Kode9 with
Spaceape at Bimhuis in Amsterdam. It was the most generous exciting trip! The first
Gaslamp Killer show in Trouw was amazing as was the
Akira Kiteshi show at Lowriders.
Lunice and
Hovatron's bash at Raw Rhythm was a blast.
Too many good mixtapes in 2009. The Skweee tape of
Metske, an
AK mixtape and the
Kidkanevil for ML comes to mind as the ones that realy stuck!
Rediscovered my Basic Channel and dubtechno collection, my Raveonettes and new beat, re-read my regae books. It was a busy year....
Soom T is this little girl with a big mouth from up north of the UK, yeah you know the G spot! Her introduction for me was when she voiced the amazing record by
Bus:
Middle Of The Road. The single from that LP is still one of my fav tracks of this century....
The
Jahtari soundsystem are one of the most interesting labels/groups working in the field of digi-dub/dubstep/dub. Their continuous out-put is amazingly strong from their
Maffi 7 inches with
Mungo's Hifi, Bo Marley, Solo Banton ao. to the 12 inches with
Disrupt, Clouds, Illyah and
Tapes.
This is already her 2nd release on Jahtari after her solo debut on the Jahtari:
Flying High, which was great! This new one is again strong. She hangs in there, lazy diction, perfect timing. Just enough words that amazing nazal voice.
