OH NO DR NO’S ETHIOPIUM

OH NO is one of those producers that I follow from their first release on. The first was Disrupt Massacre, a 12″ to introduce The Disrupt album which was mind-blowing. He is the younger brother of Madlib. Over the years he has produced some of my fav albums and tracks of the decade for me. Dr. No’s Oxperiment is a collection of very strong ideas, it is melodic and dense. It’s full of amazing sounds and voices from the orient packed in beautiful catchy poppy short tracks. The next was Now-Again ‘a take on the vast catalog of funk, soul and psychedelia contained in the Now-Again vaults’. And now there is Ethiopium. It is a more focused compressed record focusing on rare (pop)music from Ethiopia. Although over the last 10 to 15 years we’ve had some magnificent overviews of the richness of music from Ethiopia. This rework and reshape of the sounds is as brilliant as Oxperiment. The tracks feel good and stay within the rhythmic parameters of hip hop but sound wise it takes you onto a journey amazingly tempting. The record has 36 tracks (!).
